[Casey will find a gently wrapped present for him from Hob on Christmas morning, whether by his side when he wakes after the slumber party at Rue's or delivered to his doorstep.]
[What's up, Hob, you get a handwritten letter in return. It isn't written with the quill ink, but it's on quite nice paper, and the writing is not as clumsy as it used to be. All that practice with Rue has paid off.]
Dear Hob,
Thank you so much for the generous gift! I've never used a quill before, so I'll need to practice with it. But as soon as I get the hang of it I'll send you a letter using the new pen instead. The soaps are also really nice! Everything smells so good. I appreciate you thinking of me. You helped make my first real Christmas genuinely memorable.
You're very welcome for welcoming you :) I know how much Rue has missed you and loves having you here. If Rue loves you that much then you must be as special as the rest of us! And since you're their family, you're our family too. I can't wait to get to know you better, too.
[Just after the New Years celebrations, a handwritten letter arrives for Casey in turn! It is written and folded in an old Regency style, with the paper itself folded to form the envelope and sealed with a precisely pressed wax stamp. The wording is...floral at times, as is normally the case with Hob, but it's clear he has been mindful of his reader, keeping his cursive lettering neat and easy to read with minimal flourishes.]
Dearest Casey,
Words can hardly express my delight at awaking to such a fine letter! It is a fine yet dying art, I understand, one not oft practiced in spaces and times outside the one from which I hail. To know you have taken so well to letter-writing from your frequent correspondences with Rue is truly a boon, Casey. Quills and inks will come with time, as with all things. I am of firm hope that practice will only deepen your appreciation for the craft. As always, should you require or desire any guidance on the matter, both Rue and myself would be elated to be of assistance to you.
I thank you sincerely for your heartfelt words. You have all made my arrival in this world a joy beyond words. Getting to know you and the rest of the boys has been, and continues to be, the most exciting thing I have been permitted to do in a very long time. I am most blessed by your patience and your kind, open heart. In future, should you desire to partake in any activities either outdoors or within quarters that would be enriched by companionship, I would be more than happy to accompany you. Do you enjoy time in the wilderness? I find long hikes either in mountainous or forest terrains to be quite exhilerating.
[Casey's returning letter is a little clumsy; it's clear that he's been testing out the new quill and inks, but the practice he's gotten with it so far is not so great. Still, look at him trying!]
Dear Hob,
I don't know if Rue told you, but in my world letters don't exist anymore. I've heard they did in the past, but in the time I came from paper and ink didn't exist much anymore. I've been learning to write since around August, and thanks to Rue's patience and encouragement I've gotten a lot better. With this new ink and quill I think I've had to start over again! It's neat to try, though. I keep making a mess. Hopefully this letter is legible.
I'm glad it's exciting for you! I think it's exciting for us as well, for many reasons. It's good to learn about your lives from a different perspective, we get to see a new side of Rue, and you seem like a great person to get to know. We'll have lots of chances to learn more about each other, I'm sure.
For outdoor activities, I've never hiked in mountains before. My world didn't have those either, at least not where I lived. I like walking through the forests here. (We didn't have forests, or trees. I say that phrase a lot, so you may as well get used to it early on.) If you'd like company to try out either here, I'd be happy to join you. I'm sure it'd be fun.
